People just not giving a shit, just dancing. Itā€™s beautiful. I wish I had the confidence they have to do that. The sunā€™s setting, people are sat outside just being happy, living lifeā€”and itā€™s only March. What a time to be alive. ā€œI almost missed this shotā€¦ and it changed everyth ā€œI almost missed this shotā€¦ and it changed everything.ā€ This moment? Completely unplanned. Completely real. And honestlyā€¦ completely career-defining for me. At the time, I was in a mentorship and learning to see differently ā€” not just what looked good, but what felt good. And in this split second, I could feel it. The energy in the room was electric. Everyone was on their feet, completely lost in the moment, celebrating this couple with everything they had. I didnā€™t overthink the composition. I didnā€™t direct anything. I just knew they were about to cheersā€¦ so I moved. I got behind them, framed it instinctively, and trusted what was unfolding in front of me. And thenā€”this happened. The couple, totally wrapped up in each other. The room erupting around them. Pure, unfiltered joy. At the time, I donā€™t think I fully realised how special it was. It wasnā€™t until I showed my mentor and they said, ā€œSarahā€¦ this is unreal. What made you do that?ā€ And the only answer I had wasā€¦ I felt it. That was a turning point for me. It showed me that the magic isnā€™t always in perfect styling or planning (as much as I love that side). Itā€™s in the emotion. The energy. The unscripted, fleeting moments you canā€™t recreate. People have asked me to recreate this shot so many times since ā€” and Iā€™ve tried. But the truth is, you canā€™t manufacture this. It just happens. And thatā€™s what makes it so powerful. If you want to capture moments like this: 1. Stop overthinking the ā€œperfect shotā€ 2. Watch people, not poses 3. Feel the energy in the room 4. Trust your instinct and move fast 5. Let go of control ā€” the best moments arenā€™t staged This is why I fell in love with documentary photography in the first place. Itā€™s about making people feel something.
