“I almost missed this shot… and it changed everyth “I almost missed this shot… and it changed everything.” This moment? Completely unplanned. Completely real. And honestly… completely career-defining for me. At the time, I was in a mentorship and learning to see differently — not just what looked good, but what felt good. And in this split second, I could feel it. The energy in the room was electric. Everyone was on their feet, completely lost in the moment, celebrating this couple with everything they had. I didn’t overthink the composition. I didn’t direct anything. I just knew they were about to cheers… so I moved. I got behind them, framed it instinctively, and trusted what was unfolding in front of me. And then—this happened. The couple, totally wrapped up in each other. The room erupting around them. Pure, unfiltered joy. At the time, I don’t think I fully realised how special it was. It wasn’t until I showed my mentor and they said, “Sarah… this is unreal. What made you do that?” And the only answer I had was… I felt it. That was a turning point for me. It showed me that the magic isn’t always in perfect styling or planning (as much as I love that side). It’s in the emotion. The energy. The unscripted, fleeting moments you can’t recreate. People have asked me to recreate this shot so many times since — and I’ve tried. But the truth is, you can’t manufacture this. It just happens. And that’s what makes it so powerful. If you want to capture moments like this: 1. Stop overthinking the “perfect shot” 2. Watch people, not poses 3. Feel the energy in the room 4. Trust your instinct and move fast 5. Let go of control — the best moments aren’t staged This is why I fell in love with documentary photography in the first place. It’s about making people feel something. Now THIS is how you celebrate turning 60! Last ni Now THIS is how you celebrate turning 60! Last night DELIVERED! I photographed the wedding for the birthday girl’s son and daughter-in-law a couple of years ago, so I already had a feeling this was going to be a great night… and they absolutely delivered. The DJ had the dance floor packed, the room looked amazing, and the energy all night was unreal. Completely my kind of crowd. What I loved most was the family energy. You could see how much everyone genuinely cares about each other. Even the ones who would normally dodge the camera got involved for Mum, which says a lot.
